Radio Neighbourhood

A series of community-based performance events in response to the current COVID-19 pandemic when everybody has to stay at home. The event will take place in the open space of council houses, hospitals, university campuses and residential halls at various areas across London. The audience will be able to enjoy the performances from home through their windows or balconies with the sound and music broadcasted over Internet radio, which adheres to the Government Coronavirus guidance and restrictions.

The performance will be a 45-minute outdoor dance drama with music and voiceover that involves conversations and interactions of two or three performers, focusing on questions of home, displacement and memory. The story engages with ancient East Asian mythology and conveys cultural significance relating to issues of belief, identity and gender, transcending cultural backgrounds and different communities. It explores people’s psychological conditions when facing pandemic, climate change or socio-political instabilities, addressing the most pressing concerns of the modern world, including migration, human rights and ecological destruction.

We are currently in conversations with various local councils, community groups and art institutions for partnership with an aim of debuting this series of performance events in Summer 2021. Please do not hesitate to get in touch if you are interested in collaboration.

An Experiment for Radio Neighbourhood

With a core creative team of East and Southeast Asian heritage, it provides a platform to support artists who are currently underrepresented in the arts and culture industry in the UK. It is an ongoing performance project that we will be touring the story (score and script) and hiring BESEA local talents to be part of the team, including performers and musicians, to continue developing the work and to perform in the communities that they live in. We aim to make the work available to more spaces and to reach a wider audience through touring across London and the UK.
