Jane Pickersgill

I trained as a Fashion Designer and successfully practised for over two decades). After a period of freelancing and part time teaching (due to caring commitments) I embarked upon an MFA Fine Art at UAL from which I graduated in 2018. My practice begins with questioning materials, primarily those observed in the urban environment and how our senses and perception are affected by the quality of these materials. I am intrigued by the physical characteristics of super- modern architecture and by its symbolic significance to the idea of the city. More recently I am working on a project looking at materials, items and skills which exist/ed in the domestic environment. I learnt to draw and make things as a child with my maternal grandma, a powerful influence on my development. This recent research has segued into transposing materials from one environment (or use) into another quite different context and reflecting on how different environments and processes affect us as we create artworks.
